My Name is Alisa Claridy, and I have lived in San Antonio
all my life. I began singing at the age of 5. At the age of 14,
I joined a teenage singing group called "Young Love". We toured
teen clubs and opened for La Franze at the Amphitheatre. I
graduated from William Howard Taft, where I lettered in Drama
and Choir. I sang the national anthem for the National Honor
Society inductees, and in my spare time I was a part of a break
dancing group called "American Connection". I was also the first
girl to do "pop-locking" in my neighborhood. Performing for
various church groups and at talent shows is how I fell in love
with performing. From there, I went on singing for various
Fashion Shows. When I graduated from Taft, I won 1st place in
The San Antonio "Our Part Of Town" talent show, and went on to
win Miss Garza of San Antonio, as well as to win "Miss Most
Talented" for the Miss Community Center Pageant .
At the age of 16, I auditioned for my first Sterling Houston
musical, Allellia, at The Carver Cultural Center. In the
production, I played a blues singer by the name of Bethel Lee
who took after the great Bessie Smith. This role opened doors to
performing in such musicals as "Ain’t Misbehaving", "La Frantera",
"Once on this Island", "CameoLand", and "Music for The Soul"
which led to me winning an award for "Best Supporting Actress in
a Musical" at the ATAC Global Awards. I have performed at most
of the theatres here in San Antonio, to include Guadalupe, The
Carver Cultural Center, Jumpstart, and the Josephine Theatre.
Years later, I signed with an independent label by the name of
Urban Artist Records. Due to the label folding the contract was
voided out and I went on to compete in "Showtime at the Apollo",
in New York, where I was received well by the audience. From
there, I went on to join a band called "Michael Michael and the
Max", as well as playing with many well known groups of the 80’s
such as "Simply Smooth", "Differenze", "Smoke And Fire", and the
"Power House Divas".
I went on to compete in an expo put on at The Carver
Cultural Center by Carolyn Beverly which led to the finals round
in Houston where I won 1st place by myself, as well as winning
1st place with my female group Differenze. I was also nominated
for "Performer of the Year" which allowed me to perform with an
orchestra for the opening of the televised Sammy Davis Jr. Award
Show in Houston. In 2005, I competed and won in the "Gimmie the
Mic" contest of San Antonio. The desire for being in a group
setting changed when I started recording and doing various
projects with such artists as Jimmy Spacek and The Fever, Victor
Adams, Coyote Dreams, Chuck L, Clark Stevens, and Tony Manga.
I started doing various events around the city such as the
Arneson River Theatre, and La Semana Alegre. Along the way, I
was privileged to be opening for artists such as Shi, Silk, and
Mint Condition. This continued when I met a promoter named Ricky
Stevens and he booked me to open for various artists such as
High Five, Bobby Blue Bland, Art Porter, Jeff Lorber, Chaka Khan
and Najee. I have also shared a stage with Brian McKnight. I
then was picked to sing background vocals with Estefan Mendez
and toured with him and Jesse Boddego, around the city singing
tejano.
My stage career kept taking demand of my life and that’s
when I toured the schools with a play called La Frantera written
by Sterling Houston, that was based on racism in 2000. I played
a 16 yr old and also doubled as "Big Mamma". I also went on to
play a Ghost in "CameoLand". I then went back to do the band
thing but this time I was the lead singer in a band called "The
Fat Katz". I started moving around the city getting to play with
various musicians such as Frank Radarte, and bands like Texas
Radio, My first love is theatre. I was not meant to sing because
I was born with a cleft palate and I was in need of speech and
tubes in my ears. God had other plans. As I got older people
kept telling me that when I sang they felt chills and that I am
anointed. I just want to do the best I can in Gods Ministry
called Music....
